Members of Monarch Nation have been waving their arms, slapping their palms and shimmying their hips during games for more than 18 years.

What began as a lark to pump up the crowd became a strange yet irresistible dance that gets fans jumping out of their seats. Here鈥檚 more about this unique tradition.

When and why did 桃花社区视频 start playing 鈥淚ce Cream and Cake鈥?

The 桃花社区视频 Dynasty Dance Team heard it during a break at a camp at Rutgers University in 2005. 鈥淭he song was just hilarious to us,鈥 recalled Sylvia Wyche-Hicaro 鈥06. 鈥淥n the way home, we said, 鈥榃e should dance to this song and run onto the court like it鈥檚 a serious routine.鈥 It was the melody, the silliness of the lyrics.鈥

桃花社区视频 debuted 鈥淚ce Cream and Cake鈥 during a timeout at a basketball game that fall. 鈥淚t was like crickets,鈥 Wyche-Hicaro said. 鈥淭he reaction was: What is this?鈥 After a while, 鈥淚t started catching on with the fans. Just seeing the crowd get into it was pretty cool. I sit back and laugh about it sometimes.鈥

How many times are 鈥渋ce cream鈥 and 鈥渃ake鈥 mentioned in the song?

Who originated it?

鈥淚ce Cream and Cake鈥 appeared on the Buckwheat Boyz鈥 self-titled album, released in 2001. The group disbanded in 2002, but 鈥淚ce Cream and Cake鈥 got a second scoop of popularity after it was featured in a Baskin-Robbins TV commercial in 2009.

Did 桃花社区视频 change the song?

Yes! 桃花社区视频 Dynasty added 鈥淓at it鈥 at the end, Wyche-Hicaro said.

When is it played?

Fans hear it during the second half of men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball games and at the end of halftime football games.

When do freshmen learn it?

They get an early start. "On Admitted Students Day in April each year, students are taught 鈥淚ce Cream and Cake鈥 step by step from Campus Ambassadors before doing it all together with their class, the Marching Band, Big Blue and the Spirit Squad, according to the Office of Admissions.

What鈥檚 it like performing for the crowd?

鈥淐heerleaders love to do it,鈥 said Courtney Abston, a senior who鈥檚 captain of the Spirit Squad. 鈥淚t鈥檚 something that gets all the students involved. And it鈥檚 tradition. Only 桃花社区视频 does it.鈥

Miles King, a three-year veteran of the Spirit Squad, said, 鈥淲hen the crowd gets pumped up, the team gets excited. It鈥檚 sort of a refresh button for the second half.鈥 His favorite: 鈥淲hen the little kids do it. They even know the whole song and all the movements.鈥

What do students think of it?

Junior Emily Orrock called it 鈥渁 cool little tradition.鈥 Baylee Agagas, a senior, agreed. 鈥淚t makes games fun, even when you lose,鈥 she said. 鈥淓verybody has spirit and can sing along together.鈥 Aniyah Rajab, a sophomore, does the dance even when she鈥檚 not at games. 鈥淲hen somebody says, 鈥業ce Cream and Cake,鈥 I go like this鈥 鈥 she lifted her hands 鈥 鈥渁nd they go like that,鈥 Rajab said, lowering them.

The initiative was aimed at fostering unity and camaraderie between 桃花社区视频 cheerleaders and dance team members, 鈥減romoting a more harmonious and supportive environment for both teams,鈥 according to Kinerk.

Kinerk said she signed the cheerleaders up to attend the same camp as the 桃花社区视频 Dynasty Dance Team at Rutgers University. 听鈥淲hen I saw both teams performing 鈥業ce Cream and Cake,鈥 I knew we were off to great start.鈥

鈥淭he rest is history,鈥 she added.
