Nancy Travers 鈥86 held multiple titles at WKWI: programming director, DJ, morning host and marketing director.
鈥淪he cued up the tracks, worked the boards, sold the ads,鈥 said her son, Travers Eubank. 鈥淵ou鈥檇 have an easier time listing the things she didn鈥檛 do.鈥
For 18 years, Travers worked at the radio station in Kilmarnock, on Virginia鈥檚 Northern Neck. 鈥淪he embraced everyone and everything in our community,鈥 her daughter, AnnGardner Eubank, said. 鈥淪he considered her listeners her friends, and many of her clients also became her friends.鈥
Travers died of lung cancer on Jan. 25, 2022. She was 58. She retired in 2021 after receiving her diagnosis. But until the last week of her life, 鈥渟he was still in communication with them every single day about ads or helping new people learn how to sell them,鈥 her son said.
After graduating from 桃花社区视频 Dominion University, where she double majored in English and communication, Travers worked at North Carolina stations, including Beach FM, Dixie 105.7 and 102.5 The Shark.
At WKWI, Travers announced the news headlines every morning. After a while, 鈥渟he felt she was starting everyone鈥檚 day off on a negative note,鈥 AnnGardner Eubank said. 鈥淪o she came up with the idea of 鈥榯he good news story of the day.鈥
She would highlight the kindness of others. That鈥檚 what made people tune in consistently.鈥
That spirit also guided Travers鈥 final year. 鈥淪he became even more grateful every single day,鈥 her daughter said. 鈥淪he could spend that year agonizing over what was to come, but she chose to enjoy it. Her positivity was unmatched.鈥
鈥淥ne of her biggest gifts to us,鈥 her son said, 鈥渨as the ability to appreciate a ton of different music.鈥 He recalled riding in the car as a young boy, his mother 鈥減laying (rapper) Trick Daddy so loud that the car shook.鈥
Travers was 鈥渋ncredibly patient and accepting, and she grew more so as time went on,鈥 her son said. 鈥淪he grew to understand us and our eccentricities more, and she didn鈥檛 miss a beat.鈥
Travers鈥 daughter added: 鈥淪he had two kids, but she was a mom to a whole lot more. She was a lot of people鈥檚 safe space, a lot of people鈥檚 comfort and voice of reason. She was there for everyone.鈥
