The Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Sedation Certification for the Dental Hygienist is a four-day course that will provide you with the education and skills you need to administer local anesthesia. This Intensive Continuing Education program is designed to provide participants with 36 CE hours during a four-day weekend and meets the requirements for the VA Board of Dentistry regulations for dental hygienists.
Participants will receive clinical instructions under direct faculty supervision and will complete in-class evaluation quizzes to meet Board of Dentistry requirements for certification. Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive a certificate.
- Participants will serve as patients during the clinical laboratory sessions and be required to complete a medical history and an assessment of vital signs. If you are unable or unwilling to serve as a patient you must provide a suitable replacement patient. A replacement patient must be over 18 years of age and must not be pregnant.
- Agree to follow standard precautions and blood borne pathogen exposure policy.

Course Fee Details
$1,599 Registration fee covers instruction, course material, clinical laboratory supplies, approved CEU's, on-campus parking pass, and box lunch each day.
Cancellation Policy
Refund requests must be submitted to cepd@odu.edu seven (7) days prior to the start of the course. You will be assessed a $50 cancellation fee. Registration fees for cancelled participants may not be applied to future events. The sponsor reserves the right to cancel any course, in which case the registration fee will be fully refunded. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received within one week of the start of the course.
Program Overview
This 36-hour continuing education course combines lecture presentations with online study and clinical laboratory sessions leading to certification for dental hygienists in the administration of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation that meets Virginia regulation DHP, 18, VAC 60-20. Topics covered include pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, medical emergencies, legal considerations, and techniques for administration of anesthetic to the maxilla and mandible and conscious sedation.
Participants will receive clinical instructions under direct faculty supervision and will complete in-class evaluation quizzes to meet Board of Dentistry requirements for certification. Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive a certificate.
- Purchase or rent (amazon.com) and read Handbook of Local Anesthesia with Malamed's Local Anesthesia Administration DVD Package, 6th ed. or 7th edition of Stanley F. Malamed, Mosby/Elsevier ISBN 978-0323074131 (2014) or ISBN-13: 978-0323582070 (2019)
- Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management, 6th ed. Stanley F. Malamed (2017 Mosby/Elsevier ISBN 978-0313400534).
- Bring protective eyewear and face shield plus barrier gown that meet OSHA standards. You may wear scrubs, but a barrier gown must be worn over scrubs. High collared, long sleeve knee length disposable gown will suffice; Mask and treatment gloves will be supplied.
- Provide a copy of current Virginia dental hygiene license and CPR certification. You cannot take this course if pregnant or pregnancy is suspected. Faculty, staff and students are no longer required to be fully vaccinated; however, the vaccine, including a booster, is strongly encouraged in order to maintain a healthy campus.
Successful completion of the course requires:
- Attendance at each of the lecture and clinical lab sessions at 100%
- Attainment of 75% on each of the lecture quizzes
- Attainment of satisfactory level on each of the clinical laboratory processes
- 4 hours homework reading/online assignments
- 17 hours lecture and evaluation quizzes
- 15 hours clinical instruction/practical evaluations
The classroom locations for morning lecture presentations will be announced. Participants will receive a Welcome email, with classroom location, and on-campus parking pass approximately one week before the class start date.
