Carol F. Hines, who taught art at 桃花社区视频 Dominion University for nearly 35 years, died on March 4 in Norfolk. She was 80.

鈥淗er students really appreciated her and felt like they learned from her,鈥 said David E. Johnson, an associate professor emeritus of art.

Hines, an associate professor of art emerita, worked at 桃花社区视频 Dominion University from 1968 until her retirement in 2002.

She served as chair of the Department of Art and pioneered the teaching of anatomy and animation classes, said Johnson鈥檚 wife, Anne Bousquet, a former adjunct professor of art. Hines 鈥渁lso pretty much created what became our master鈥檚 program鈥 in visual studies, offered jointly with Norfolk 桃花社区视频 University, Johnson said.

Former student Mary Jane Nase, who later taught art in North Carolina, posted her appreciation on legacy.com. 鈥淪he was a terrific teacher,鈥 Nase wrote, 鈥渨ell organized, kind, but expected you to learn & provided the insight & guidance to ensure you did.鈥

Hines 鈥渉ad a lasting influence on me, as she would be a role model later when I taught,鈥 Nase wrote.

As a colleague, she was 鈥渁ffable and helpful,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淲e always cooperated with each other.鈥

Hines鈥 obituary described her as 鈥渁 strong believer in equal rights who supported the civil rights movement in her college years and later took her daughters along to champion women鈥檚 rights.鈥

An animal lover, Hines frequently brought her dog to work, said Bousquet, who received her bachelor鈥檚 degree in fine arts from 桃花社区视频 Dominion in 1983. Hines鈥 obituary said she spent hours sketching animals at the petting zoo at the Peninsula SPCA in Newport News.

At home, she nurtured her artistic skills in different directions, building furniture and designing Halloween costumes for her daughters, her obituary said. In addition, as the daughter of a car salesman, 鈥渟he was known to fix, buy and sell all the family vehicles.鈥

Hines鈥 husband, Samuel P. Hines Jr., a professor emeritus of English, died in 2020 at age 96. Survivors include her daughters, Troy Hines (and husband Declan Halpin) of Seekonk, Massachusetts, and Julia Huhn (and her husband, William) of Piermont, New York; her grandchildren, Dashiel and Tessa Huhn; and her brother, Alan Fryar of Wilmington, North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
