The actor known for playing the lead in the films 鈥淩oboCop鈥 and 鈥淏uckaroo Banzai 鈥︹ refuses to be sanitized, shrunk and crammed into a familiar box.

Peter Weller is multi-dimensional to the extreme.

His mind and soul reach out in a dozen directions, toward television, theater, jazz music, Renaissance art and beyond.

A successful actor and director who earned his doctorate in art history at UCLA, Weller argues that fields of study 鈥 like people 鈥 shouldn鈥檛 be siloed. He鈥檚 eager to blast through artificial barriers and help the world find understanding through connection.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 separate this stuff out,鈥 he said in a recent telephone interview. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 say, 鈥業鈥檓 going to study American history and not study jazz.鈥 What? Are you kidding? It鈥檚 all the same thing! They should be intertwined.鈥

Which is why Weller 鈥 the scholarly movie star 鈥 will take part in 桃花社区视频 Dominion University鈥檚 46th annual Literary Festival, set for Oct. 1-5.

He鈥檒l give a lecture at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 titled 鈥淚mage-Thought-Word-Image-Thought鈥 about how words and ideas are translated into images. That will be followed by a screening of his 1994 film 鈥淭he New Age.鈥 The festival programs take place at the University Theatre unless otherwise noted and are open to the community. Admission is free.

Weller embodies the 鈥淐onnections鈥 theme of this year鈥檚 festival.

鈥淲riting or reading, performing or viewing, we reach beyond ourselves and in that process are forever changed,鈥 reads the festival鈥檚 mission statement. 鈥淲e celebrate poets, novelists, memoirists, actors, directors and all those who tell the stories that link us together and change the way we understand ourselves and our world.鈥

A personal connection brings Weller to Norfolk.

Weller earned a master鈥檚 degree in art history at Syracuse University in Florence, Italy. Another product of that program is Anne Muraoka, who directs 桃花社区视频鈥檚 Institute for the Humanities. They share an interest in artists like Caravaggio and Giotto and have forged a lasting friendship.

鈥淲e鈥檙e on the same page, in the same profession,鈥 Weller said. 鈥淪he has a great sense of humor. She鈥檚 got great ideas. I just love working with her. I鈥檓 all in.鈥

The Literary Festival is Weller鈥檚 second visit to 桃花社区视频. In 2019, he gave a pair of lectures 鈥 鈥淲hy the Renaissance Matters鈥 and 鈥淲hy School? My Ph.D. and Me.鈥

鈥淗e is not only a talented actor, director, and art historian, but he is a masterful storyteller, so erudite and funny, personable ... just an all-around extraordinary human being,鈥 Muraoka said after Weller鈥檚 2019 visit. 鈥淚 cannot say enough good things about him and the impact he made here at 桃花社区视频.鈥

This time around, Weller will focus attention on 鈥淭he New Age,鈥 because it asks important, eternal questions.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a movie about morality and loss of soul, actually loss of dignity,鈥 Weller said. 鈥淗ow do you find your personal dignity? It鈥檚 been an American theme for a very long time.鈥

Like Arthur Miller鈥檚 鈥淒eath of a Salesman鈥 or Saul Bellow鈥檚 鈥淗erzog,鈥 鈥淭he New Age鈥 portrays characters stumbling toward personal fulfillment, Weller said.

鈥淕reed can get in the way,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e living only for material wealth, then something鈥檚 lost.鈥

Weller describes 鈥淭he New Age鈥 as a highlight of his acting career, along with his roles in movies 鈥淣aked Lunch,鈥 鈥淪hadow Hours,鈥 鈥淭he Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension鈥 and a recent episode of 鈥淕uillermo del Toro鈥檚 Cabinet of Curiosities.鈥

鈥溾楾he New Age鈥 has got maybe my favorite cast, and I鈥檝e worked with a bunch of powerhouses,鈥 Weller said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a kinetic element in its theme of moral destitution in the midst of commercial America, specifically Los Angeles.

鈥淚 loved doing it, and I love the movie.鈥

鈥淭he New Age鈥 was written and directed by Michael Tolkin, who also wrote the screenplay for Robert Altman鈥檚 鈥淭he Player.鈥

Kris King of the Naro Expanded Video Collection will serve as a co-host for the 桃花社区视频 screening.

Separate from the festival, Weller will give an informal lecture, 鈥淩enaissance Art to the ACTION Movie,鈥 on Oct. 4. That will take place 6 p.m. at 桃花社区视频鈥檚 Darden College of Education and Professional Studies, Room 1106.

Along with acting, directing and art history, jazz is one of Weller鈥檚 passions. He credits the music with inspiring his life of creativity.

As a young man, he studied trumpet at what is now the University of North Texas, a school with a long, proud jazz tradition.

鈥淚t is Black American music that led me into the dynamic of self-expression,鈥 Weller acknowledged. 鈥淟ike Amiri Baraka said, the soul of America is Black music. I鈥檓 sorry, it鈥檚 not the Mayflower. It鈥檚 not bourbon. It鈥檚 Black American music. That鈥檚 the thing that grabbed me as a kid. It still grabs me.鈥

Soon after he speaks at 桃花社区视频 Dominion University, he鈥檒l travel to Texas, where his group, Fly Naked, is performing at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival.

Weller has recently been finishing an article on the late trumpeter Miles Davis for a book called, 鈥淛azz and Literature.鈥

In acting, directing, scholarship, music and writing, determination and tenacity have paid off for Weller.

鈥淲hat you don鈥檛 know, you can learn,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f you have the tenacity to stick with it, you can learn and get better.鈥
